Baby Health

Newborn babies have some special needs and need some extra attention to ensure that they are healthy.

When babies are first born, they have had limited exposure to infection (some exposure has occurred via the placental wall during pregnancy), and are therefore vulnerable to some types of infection. Immunisation is recommended to protect against some serious childhood diseases such as polio, diphtheria, tetanus, mumps and measles. The first immunisation is due when the baby is 2 months old, and at regular intervals afterwards.

The amount of sleep babies need varies between children and they will usually need regular naps throughout the day. Most babies will not sleep through the night until they are older. You can also help to protect against SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) by sleeping babies on their backs, making sure their head is not covered, removing toys and pets from the sleeping place, and by not smoking around your baby.

It is important never to leave your baby or child alone around water or a high surface (eg. table top, near top of stairs).  Drowning and falls are the most common forms of childhood accidents.  You should always make sure your child travels in a car with a properly fitted and age appropriate child restraint, even for the shortest distance.

Attending your local Community Child Health service (ring the number below to find out where your nearest one is) is a great way to learn about how to deal with teething, bathing, hygiene, feeding, and common ailments such as nappy rash and cradle cap.
