Contraception

There are many methods of contraception to prevent pregnancy and not all methods are suitable for everyone.  It is important to think about your individual needs and discuss all your options with a doctor.

Family Planning Queensland have detailed information on all the contraceptive options.  FPQ clinics are located across Queensland and general enquiries can be made by phone (07) 3250 0240.  This fact sheet from Women's Health Queensland Wide outlines "the pill".

Emergency Contraception (sometimes called the "morning after" pill)

Emergency contraception can reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex or if contraception fails if taken soon after sex. To be most effective in preventing pregnancy, emergency contraception must be taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex (when it is estimated that it can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 95%). It can be taken up to 120 hours following unprotected sex, but its effectiveness declines over this time to 58% effectiveness.

You do not need to see a doctor to get Emergency Contraception... you can get it over the counter at the chemist.

No contraceptives except condoms help to protect you against STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections) so it is a good idea to get a Sexual Health Check if you have had unprotected sex.

Sexual health services available across Queensland are listed by location at Queensland Health.
