Post Natal Depression

While most women will feel a bit emotional and anxious in the first few weeks after birth, these feelings are usually due to the body readjusting its hormone levels, fatigue and coping with many changes.  These feelings should pass quite quickly and this period is sometimes referred to as the ‘baby blues’.

However, if feelings of depression, tiredness, and irritability continue, along with difficulties with sleeping, eating or thinking clearly, then you may have what is called post-natal depression. Post-natal depression does not usually just pass by itself, and is more serious than the ‘baby blues’. Sometimes it helps to get professional assistance (e.g. from a doctor or counsellor) in dealing with post-natal depression, and some women derive a lot of benefit by joining a support group for  women in the same position.  Medication may also be recommended.

Women may also experience depression during pregnancy, called ante-natal depression.  Women experiencing persistant symptoms of depression, as listed above, should seek help rather than wait for this to "go away".  Experiencing depression during pregnancy is not necessarily an indicator that a women will experience post natal depression.
