Political Advocacy

Children by Choice is politically active on issues relating to unplanned pregnancy and abortion. Children by Choice recognises that unplanned pregnancy is a reality of women’s lives.

We are currently working on:

• Transparency of advertising for pregnancy counselling services
• Removing abortion laws from the Queensland Criminal Code
• Making RU486 (a medical abortion drug also known as Mifepristone) available to Australian women
• Making abortion services more accessible to all women, regardless of where they live, their age, financial status, and cultural and religious background

In 2003, Children by Choice, in conjunction with a number of sexual and reproductive health organisations, advocated for making Emergency Contraception available over the counter at pharmacies. This campaign was successful and Emergency Contraception was made available over the counter as of 1^st January 2004.
