Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception can reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex or if contraception fails, if it is taken soon after having sex.

To be effective in preventing pregnancy, emergency contraception must be taken with 24 hours of unprotected sex (when it estimated that it can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 95%).  If it is taken 48-72 hours after unprotected sex, it is only 58% effective.

You do not need to see a doctor to get Emergency Contraception, you can get it over the counter at the chemist.  The pharmacist will advise you about how to take it.

Emergency contraception does not protect you against STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) so it is a good idea to get a Sexual Health Check if you have had unprotected sex.
