Genital Warts

What is it?

  • Genital warts are caused by a group of viruses called human papilloma viruses (HPV)
  • The visible genital warts is a symptom of being infected with HPV

 How do I get it?

  • Genital warts are caused by skin to skin contact in the genital area

How do I know if I have it?

  • HPV infects the skin and may not always result in visible warts, therefore it is important to remember that HPV can be commonly transmitted from a person with NO SYMPTOMS
  • Genital warts are painless, fleshy growths or bumps seen most often on and around the genitals and anus including the inside of the vagina
  • It is important to remember that HPV can also be passed on by oral sexual contact

What do I do if I suspect I have it?

  • Visit your local sexual health clinic or GP
  • There is no cure for HPV, but the visible warts can be treated by a variety of methods
  • HPV can cause changes to the cells of the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer so, once sexually active it is important for all women to have a Pap smear every 2 years

 How can I protect myself?

  • Condoms can help protect you against catching genital warts ONLY if the condom covers the warts. If the warts are in the wider groin area (i.e., other than the genitals), condoms will not necessarily protect you.
  • It is a good idea to check your partner’s genital area for any warts symptoms (Warning - this link shows very graphic photos) before engaging in sexual activity
