SUMMARY
A medication abortion, also called a medical abortion, is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy using prescribed tablets.
In Australia, medication abortion is generally available up to 9 weeks of pregnancy and can often be completed at home with support from a doctor, GP, or clinic.
This page explains how the process works, what to expect, and where you can find support and services in Queensland.

A medication abortion involves two prescribed medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.
These work together to safely end an early pregnancy.
Step 1 – Mifepristone
Step 2 – Misoprostol
Cramping, pain, and bleeding are expected — similar to a natural miscarriage.
Other possible side effects include:
Rare complications may include:
You should be provided with a 24/7 phone number to contact a nurse if you have concerns or questions.
If you experience heavy bleeding (soaking more than two pads per hour for two hours), severe pain, or feel unwell, contact your provider or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice.
Your first appointment will include:
If you visit a private clinic, all tests are usually completed during your appointment.
If you visit a GP, you may need to attend pathology and imaging services separately before receiving your prescription.

Mifepristone is usually taken at the clinic after your consultation and test results.
If prescribed by a GP, it may be taken at a second appointment after the results have been reviewed.
This medication starts the process by detaching the pregnancy from the uterine wall.
Most people feel no physical symptoms at this stage.
Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours after mifepristone.
The tablets are placed between your cheek and gum to dissolve and absorb.
This stage usually happens at home.
Cramping, bleeding, and passing of clots indicate that the medication is working.
Your doctor may recommend pain relief or schedule a short follow-up consultation within 3–4 days to check your progress.
A follow-up appointment is essential to confirm the abortion is complete.
This usually occurs between 11 days and 3 weeks after taking the first medication.
Your doctor or GP will check that:
If any tissue remains or the pregnancy continues, a surgical abortion may be recommended.
After recovery, your doctor may discuss contraceptive options to help you plan future pregnancies.
Medication abortion (MS2Step) is available up to 9 weeks gestation.
