To the people of Queensland and our political leaders
Early access to abortion care in Queensland is currently at risk by the proposed disallowance motion put forward by Robbie Katter MP to be debated in Parliament on 2nd June 2026.
This motion seeks to reduce the ability of approved healthcare providers to prescribe MS-2 Step, a medication used to safely end an early pregnancy up to 9-weeks gestation.
We are deeply concerned about the impact this disallowance motion would have on regional, rural and remote communities, who already face at times extensive barriers to timely healthcare.
For many Queenslanders outside major cities, nurse practitioners and endorsed midwives are not just the most accessible healthcare providers, they are often the only timely option available. Delays caused by unnecessary restrictions do not prevent abortions. They make them harder, later, and more complex.
Medication abortion is already legal in Queensland. Nurse practitioners and endorsed midwives are already authorised to prescribe it. Restricting prescribing rights would not protect anyone, it would further exacerbate access inequities within our already stretched healthcare system.
Importantly, the decision to allow appropriately trained healthcare professionals to prescribe MS-2 Step was not made lightly. The Therapeutic Goods Administration approved these changes following expert advice from the Advisory Committee on Medicines, which includes clinical, scientific, and consumer representatives.
Nurse practitioners and endorsed midwives are highly trained clinicians already providing complex care. They are comprehensively skilled and trusted health professionals, and therefore we should continue to endorse their expertise and professional judgement. Queensland Health’s Guideline for Endorsed Midwife Scope of Clinical Practice explicitly recommends that processes be in place to enable endorsed midwives to work to their full scope of practice, and that they be responsive to the needs of the population across the full continuum of the health journey.
Every person deserves timely, evidence-based healthcare regardless of their postcode.
We call on the Members of Parliament to reject this disallowance motion and continue to support safe and accessible abortion care for all Queenslanders.
