This workshop explores domestic violence and reproductive coercion and abuse in the context of pregnancy options decision-making. It will enhance understanding, assessment and referral pathways for health and allied health care and support practitioners who may provide pregnancy options counselling or support clients who have ongoing case management or engagement with services.
Event description
This workshop aims to build your skills and confidence in identifying reproductive coercion and abuse with clients. This workshop looks at both the history of RCA within Australia and its impacts on First Nation Australians along with its historic and current occurrence with people with disabilities. You will learn how to identify RCA behaviours and warning signs and will be equipped with strategies for speaking about RCA with clients. This workshop also looks at contraception and violence. This workshop also introduces participants to the principles surrounding compassionate abortion care and the different types of abortions a person may have access to in Australia.
On completion of this workshop, you will:
- Be able to describe RCA and how it is a form of abuse
- Be able to identify warning signs and red flags of RCA
- Have language around how to acknowledge a disclosure of RCA
- Understand how RCA has been used against First Nation people and people with disabilities in Australia.
- Able to discuss ways a person can explore contraception options with the presence of RCA in their relationship.
- Safety plan and refer clients on
Note: While an intersectional lens has been embedded across this training, there is also a section of our online module which further explains intersectionality and its relationship to reproductive rights. It is assumed that everyone attending CbyC training has completed the short online information module before commencing the training.
Workshop aims
Build the capacity of healthcare professionals in responding to clients with compassionate and trauma-informed care.
Workshop structure
This workshop is run online for over four hours. There will be plenty of breaks and time for discussions and activities throughout the training. It is expected that participants will have their cameras on throughout the training.
Time and assessment
This workshop will take approximately 4 hours and it is estimated that the online module will take under 60mins to complete.
On completion of this workshop, a Certificate of Completion will be issued.
Target audience
This workshop is for anyone who has or is working in the human services, and community services sector and who has either completed an introduction to pregnancy options or who has extensive knowledge of sexual and reproductive health. It is appropriate for social workers, community workers, nurses, GPs and support workers.
Each delivery is capped at 25 participants. Minimum numbers apply in order for the scheduled training to proceed. We also have several scholarship positions for the training. Prerequisite knowledge
Completion of Introduction to Pregnancy Options.
Participants are required to have a strong understanding of violence against women, primary prevention and the causes/drivers of violence against women as this content will not be covered in the workshop. Participants are also expected to be familiar with the concept of intersectionality.
